Now at the Functional Neurology Institute: hyperbaric oxygen therapy in HBOT

The Functional Neurology Institute closely follows developments in the field of recovery from acquired (brain) injuries. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is one such development. Starting in July 2023, we will therefore be using this therapy as a supplement to the three-dimensional balance chair. This helps the body recover better and faster.

The oxygen tent

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is based on knowledge gained in the diving world, among other places. When we administer oxygen to our bodies under pressure, that oxygen can circulate more effectively, significantly increasing the chance of recovery from trauma. In several hospitals, the therapy is performed in large hyperbaric tanks, where several patients are seated simultaneously to receive 100% oxygen for a period of time. At the Functional Neurology Institute, you can now receive a similar treatment in our oxygen tent, the HBOT. The difference compared to the oxygen tank in hospitals? In our oxygen tent, you lie down, allowing the blood containing the oxygen to circulate freely. Only you receive treatment at that time, and the tent is made of a white, "tent-like" material with windows, reducing the risk of claustrophobic reactions.

Increases the chance of recovery

A lack of oxygen in your body's cells can be caused by trauma, such as an accident, a fall, a blow to the head, or an inflammatory reaction resulting from toxic substances to which we are exposed. Due to factors such as oxygen deficiency, some bodily functions do not recover or recover very slowly. Oxygen is the fuel that should ensure you can go the extra mile. The oxygen you normally breathe is sufficient for a healthy body to function normally. A body that is experiencing trauma and has to work hard to recover needs more oxygen. We can now offer that extra dose of 100% oxygen. Sessions in our oxygen tent offer the affected tissue a chance to recover faster.

Why administer supplemental oxygen under high pressure?

When a restriction in the body occurs due to trauma, it is difficult for oxygen to reach the right areas. When the pressure is increased, as happens in the oxygen tent, the blood cells and blood plasma that carry the oxygen are compressed. This makes it easier for the oxygen to reach the hard-to-reach areas and therefore the vulnerable areas. This way, the areas that need it most still receive the oxygen they need to recover.

About the treatment

At the Functional Neurology Institute, the oxygen tent is used to supplement the treatment we provide with the balance chair. The patient lies down in the oxygen tent, after which the pressure inside is slowly built up. Once the pressure has built up, you can compare it to the pressure a diver experiences when he is about 3 to 5 meters below sea level. While the pressure is increasing, you may feel this in your ears. You can easily relieve this by clearing your ears. Other than that, you won't feel anything during the treatment. Towards the end of the session, the pressure is gradually reduced. When the pressure returns to a normal level, you will be helped out of the oxygen tent. After a short break, you can return home or to your hotel.

Good to know:

The patient is provided with special clothing to wear throughout the entire treatment process. This clothing is particularly important in the oxygen tent, as only 100% cotton clothing may be worn inside. Devices such as mobile phones or tablets are not permitted in the oxygen tent, but you may bring a book or magazine.
You may not wear makeup during the session in the oxygen tent.
The oxygen tent has six windows for viewing.
During the session, you will be alone in the tent. Our staff will monitor the oxygen application continuously.
Under no circumstances may you leave the oxygen tent during the session!
