Autoimmune diseases and FNS
Functional Neurological Syndrome (FNS)
Functional Neurological Syndrome (FNS) is a condition in which the brain and nervous system malfunction. The signals that normally drive movement, sensation, balance, and speech are temporarily disrupted. This can lead to serious physical symptoms, while examination often reveals no permanent brain damage.
FNS is therefore not an "imagined illness", but a real disorder of brain and nerve function. The nervous system functions differently, but with the right therapy, it can learn to recover.
Why so many people with FNS feel unheard
Many people with FNS have already undergone a long medical journey. They have visited various doctors and therapists, often without results or clarity.
The symptoms are real, but they are not always recognized. Too often, patients are told: "You just have to learn to live with it."
That is discouraging, and unfair. Thanks to modern neurological insights, we now know that FNS is treatable, provided the approach is aimed at restoring brain communication and not simply treating symptoms.
The role of the immune system and the gut
Our immune system protects us from invaders like bacteria and viruses. But in some people, this system becomes disrupted and attacks the body's own cells.
A large part of this immune system (approximately 80%) is located in the small intestine. Here, a direct connection is created between the gut, the immune system, and the nervous system—the so-called gut-brain axis.
When this balance is disrupted by stress, inflammation, fatigue, or diet, it can lead to symptoms such as:
- decreased concentration
- sleep problems
- fatigue
- muscle weakness or sensory disturbances
- functional impairment
The Functional Neurology Institute considers this complex relationship between the body, brain, and immune system in every treatment plan.
Our vision: recovery is possible
At the Functional Neurology Institute in Lisse, we don't believe in "just learning to live with it."
We believe in recovery and improving quality of life through targeted training and insight.
Our team combines current knowledge from neurology, neurocognitive therapy, neurometabolism, neuroimmunology, and nutritional science. We look not only at the symptoms but also at the root cause of the disruption.
Our multi-faceted therapeutic approach focuses on:
- Neurological training – relearning healthy brain and movement patterns.
- Neuro-Vestibular guidance – restoring coordination, balance, and strength.
- Neuro-Cognitive support – reducing stress, anxiety, and overstimulation.
Blood intolerance analysis and nutritional advice – strengthening gut health and the immune system.
This integrated approach increasingly demonstrates significant improvements in daily functioning, energy, self-confidence, and quality of life.
A new perspective
Functional Neurological Syndrome is not an end point, but the beginning of a recovery process.
With the right treatment, the nervous system can relearn how to function and the body can regain balance.
At the Functional Neurology Institute in Lisse, every patient receives:
- a personal analysis,
- an individual treatment plan,
- and professional guidance from specialists with up-to-date knowledge of FNS.
We offer an environment where knowledge, empathy, and recovery converge—and where you, as a person, are central.
