Insomnia

Science

At the Neurological Functional Institute (FNI), we collaborate indirectly with Manchester Metropolitan University (UK) through the NeuroToxicity Research Foundation (neurotoxicityresearch.org), in collaboration with Amsterdam UMC and Radboud UMC. Since November 2023, we have been conducting a large - scale study - which will run until the end of 2028 - on neurotoxicity in cockpit and cabin crew and frequent flyers. The study shows that insomnia is one of the recurring symptoms.

Scientific evidence (literature references)
• Neurotoxicity and sleep structure: Animal studies show that chronic lead exposure leads to disruptions in the sleep-wake cycle, with reduced deep sleep, increased wakefulness, and disruption of clock gene expression in the hypothalamus (Disrupted sleep homeostasis and altered expression of……, C.Y. Hsu, 2021). • Toxic molecules and the blood-brain barrier: Chronic sleep deprivation can disrupt the blood-brain barrier, allowing neurotoxins from the bloodstream to enter the brain—potentially damaging neuronal function (Insomnia: Sleep loss causes brain vulnerability to toxic elements, Beatriz Gómez González, 2014).
• Sleep disruptors and brain cognitive health: Furthermore, it is well-established that sleep deprivation negatively impacts learning, memory, synaptic plasticity, and overall cognitive functioning (Neurobiological consequences of sleep deposition, K. Alkadhi, 2013).

In summary, these studies demonstrate how toxic influences and sleep disruption can trigger and exacerbate a vicious cycle of neurological dysfunction.

Our innovative approach through the Functional Neurology Institute (FNI)

Despite the fact that reputable foundations in the Netherlands provide financial support for research, much traditional research remains limited in its impact. However, FNI offers new models, based on emerging theories/ideas and applied research, that focus on the cause—not just the symptoms—of chronic insomnia. We introduce elements that have never been studied before, with consistently promising indications for lasting improvement.

Have you tried many things without finding a real solution? Our evidence-based, functional neurological approach can help you.
